A girl who is pregant at East High School is requesting that they give her 4 weeks of excused absence post-preganancy... basically maternity leave.
Why not? Presuming this girl, and others in her situation, will still have to fulfill the same requirements for graduation, I think it should be fair enough for these girls to leave. However, I don't think the schools should have any special responsibility to help these girls catch up later - that is there job and one person's pregnancy cannot put undue work on teachers who are already overburdened.
These girls should take responsibility for becoming pregnant. To stay true to my libertarian philosophy, the schools shouldn't prevent them from taking time off. I hope they will realize that an education is important, especially if they need to take care of a young child. But, if the girls take time off, it is there job to get caught up. Take responsibility for yourself. And, next time, wrap it up.
