Barack Obama drew an overflow crowd to the 9,000 seat Magnuss Arena at DU today as they had to setup speakers for the crowd on the field outside to hear his speech. Caroline Kennedy introduced Obama just a few days after her uncle, Senator Ted Kennedy, endorsed Obama for the Democratic nomination. She began her introduction at 11:00 and Obama spoke until just before noon. People lined up to enter as early as 4:30 AM.
Famous Denverites on hand were Broncos wide receiver, Rod Smith, and former Denver mayor Federico Pena who is national co-chair of Obama's campaign.
Obama needs a strong showing nationwide on Super Tuesday if he is to keep pace with apparent front-runner Hillary Clinton who has large leads in many of the big states that will be voting that day.

Barack Obama rally at Magnuss Arena: 8:30 AM Wednesday
Admission is free for the Barack Obama rally at Magnuss Arena at DU this Wednesday. Doors open at 8:30 A.M. and marks Obama's attempt to capture the victory in the Colorado Caucus on February 5, Super Tuesday!
I would recommend arriving early. The event is not listed on Obama's website, but details were reported in the Rocky Mountain News:

New Kids on the Block making a comeback
A bit off-topic, but an interesting news bite on Yahoo! that the New Kids on the Block are considering a reunion tour. The band sold 70MM albums in their career but I doubt they are selling many lately. Let's hope one of the five nixes it.
Why are they doing this?

Romney, Obama lead respective Colorado Caucus polls
Current polling data for the Colorado Caucus next tuesday has finally emerged from the Denver Post, conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc.
Their polling data shows a runaway for Mitt Romney on the Republican side of the ledger while Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are running within the margin of error for the Democrats.
Specifically, Obama leads Clinton 34% to 32% (3.5 margin of error) in the poll of 800 registered Colorado voters (and narrowed down to likely Caucus goers) taken January 21-23. John Edwards received 17% while 14% were undecided.
Mitt Romney polled at 43% while Mccain came in at 24%. Laggers were Huckabee at 17%, Ron Paul at 5%, and Giuliani at 4%.
This poll takes into account the most recent Republican primary contests but does not take into account any possible bump Barack Obama may receive from his dominating victory in Saturday's Democratic South Carolina primary.
It seems to be a two person race on each side, but most of the drama will probably come from the Democrats. As earlier mentioned in this blog, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton (on Hillary's behalf) will be in the state this Wednesday to garner the additional support needed to capture the state.

Bill Clinton in Colorado on Wednesday
Hillary Clinton has dispatched Bill Clinton for some campaigning and fundraising Wednesday in order to increase her support in the Colorado Caucus on February 5. This visit overlaps with a visit from Barack Obama, that I just reported. As Barack Obama is coming personally and Hillary Clinton is just sending Bill, many are speculating that this fact, combined with strong polling data in the state for Obama, points to a Barack Obama victory in the Democratic Caucus in Colorado.

Review: D'Vine Wine Denver
D'Vine Wine Denver is a winery located right in downtown Denver, at 1660 Champa St. They purchase grapes from producers in Napa Valley and have a wide variety of wines available off the shelf. The main thrust of the business, it seems, is to allow people to come in off the street and craft their own wines. You select the blend you would like and then the winemakers at D'Vine Wine craft the wine over 10-14 weeks at which point you return to bottle it.
I did not create my own wine or even ask them about it, so I am not reviewing that activity. This is simply a review of the bottle of wine I purchased from them. I went and purchased a bottle of their Cabernet Savignon, my favorite grape. The bottle cost $18, a little bit higher than I would have expected for a winery on a corner in Denver. The label on the bottle looked cheap as did the "foil" at the top. When I popped out the cork, I was sorry to see it was synthetic.
Overall, the wine was pretty simplistic. There was really no complexity and a very short finish. The wine slightly opened up after a few minutes, but overall it stayed the same throughout the evening. For $18, there are a ton of much better options that you could get from a liquor store. The cabernet from D'Vine Wine Denver compared to a wine that I would expect to retail at $7-10.
To sum up, I won't buy another bottle of win from D'Vine Wine Denver, but perhaps the winemaking is a fun activity.
Score: 2/10

Final Verdict - Rumor that Britney Spears is moving to Denver is completely BOGUS!!
It was officially confirmed this week (following my own common sense dismissal) that the rampant rumor of Britney Spears moving to Denver/Colorado/Estes Park/Cherry Creek North/any other place in the area is completely false. Penny Parker, gossip/society columnist with the Rocky Mountain News, reported that John Sundahl, the real estate developer with who Britney had allegedly put a deposit on a home in Cherry Creek North and toured rehab centers in Estes Park with, called her directly to dispute this rumor. He said that he dated Britney briefly after meeting her in rehab in L.A., but broke up with her because her drug problem was too crazy and he never travelled to Denver with her. He was here with his Britney lookalike (apparently) girlfriend. He did, in fact, put a deposit on some property in Cherry Creek North which he is now in danger of losing thanks to the unwanted publicity this story has generated.
So, for the last time: Britney Spears is categorically NOT moving to Colorado.
Thanks to Penny Parker for getting this all cleared up for everybody and putting an end to the speculation.

Spire gets financing - construction resumed
The Spire, a residential project by Randy Nichols project at 14th and Champa has gotten its financing and construction will resume again for completion in December 2009. The project had been out of money and stalled completely. This is good news for Denver because there has been a motionless crane on our skyline for the last few months and a building foundation just sitting there. As this is the first significant highrise to be built in Denver since the 1980s, it would have been a shame for it to not move forward.
Spire will be 41 story residential tower with lots of amenities starting at $200,000.

Rockies sign Tulowitzki to 6 year, $31 MM deal
The Rockies made a smart move today and signed their next franchise player, Troy Tulowitzki, to a 6 year, $31 million deal with a club option for a 7th year at $15 million. Good move to lock him up at this price now instead of a more expensive price if he continues to produce at the rate he did last year. Also, with Todd Helton nearing the end of his career, the Rockies need to lock-in a player that can be the new face of the franchise and that they can heavily market around. Tulowitzki proved very popular in his rookie year and probably can be that player.
From the Denver Post:

Colorado Blue Law Repeal Update
Senator Jennifer Veiga's Senate Bill 82 is now in the hands of the Business and Labor Committee. This bill would allow liquor, beer, and wine to be sold on Sundays.
The other bill to allow supermarkets to sell regular beer and wine, introduced by Senator Brandon Shaffer, is also in process. Interestingly, the law as it exists now allows each grocery chain to have a single location in Colorado that does sell wine and beer (not on Sunday, either) but I am not aware of any of those locations. Can anybody point me to one? Regardless, let's hope this bill goes down hard.
An op-ed in the Rocky Mountain News today says this won't hurt liquor stores because the grocery stores will only have a limited selection due to shelf space limitations. I strongly disagree with this and believe that independent liquor stores WILL be hurt and many will end up closing and people will just take the limited selection from grocery stores. How many people appreciate a really nice bottle of wine or special brew of beer that they will go pick out something more expensive versus taking whatever is cheaper and easier from the grocery store? Some, but not most. Liquor stores will lose that segment regardless and many will go out of business. We will lose choice and selection for sure.
To support Jennifer Veiga for her work on this bill, here is a link to her website to get her a little more exposure:

Nene's testicular tumor was malignant
Report came out today contradicting the previous report that Nene's testicular tumor was benign and confirmed that it instead was a cancerous tumor. However, the right testical was removed and there are no signs that the cancer spread anywhere else. This is great news and it is very likely that he should be able to go forward healthy and cancer free. He is also slated to return to the Nuggets in mid-march, leaving plenty of time for the team to re-gel in advance of the playoffs.

DNC Housing Update
A quick peak at Craigslist shows that lodging offers at private homes (condos or houses)for the Democratic National Convention in Denver this August are being posted for between $1000 and $2000 per night, with one week minimums.
This, again, is a great trend to transfer some benefits of the DNC directly to denver residents. I am curious to know if any of these outrageously priced offers are being taken?

Review: YumYums Delights
I finally got to try cupcakes from YumYums Delights in the Denver Pavilliions on the 16th Street Mall. I have had them before but only after they were a few days old so it would not have been a fair review.
YumYums Delights specialty is their Red Velvet cupcake which has a vanilla frosting and a red colored cake that has some cocoa flavor. There are many varieties that you can try. I got a red velvet, a vanilla bliss, and a chocolate dutchess. Overall, each was a good cupcake. The cake itself is moist and tasty. What really makes a cupcake, of course, is its frosting. The frosting on YumYums Delights cupcakes is really light and creamy as if it has been heavily whipped. For my tastes, the frosting is too light as I prefer something that has a little more substance to it. Still, overall the cupcakes are simple and good.
One problem with YumYums Delights is their packaging. As mentioned earlier, I had previously had their cupcakes but only after a few days and they had dried out. Other cupcakes I've had from cupcake stores in Chicago which had traveled all the way to Denver remained moist after many days. I would suggest they revisit their packaging. But, if you plan to eat the cupcakes that day, then don't worry.
YumYums Cupcakes makes a reliable, simple, and good cupcake but I suspect I will find something more special as I review other cupcake stores in Denver.

Restaurant Review: Aix Restaurant
Aix restaurant is a little place on 17th street in uptown. We got there a little early at 6:30 but by 7:30 the place was packed. The walls are a dark chocolate brown and there are silver ornaments hanging from the ceiling. It has an intimate atmosphere, although the tables are a little close together.
The wine list is small and lacks enough choices in the $25-40 range. One note, they have a decent loaf of bread with a nice compote butter, but you have to ask for it; I don't remember if it was free or not.
Aix has a small menu with limited choices but everything we ordered was good. The caesar salad was one of the better ones in denver with big full lettuce leafs and a very good dressing. Big pieces of fresh grated parmesan cheese were scattered on top. I ordered the Gnocchi; usually gnocchi comes with a cream sauce but this one came with a brown butter sauce. There were crispy baked sweet potato bits on top and sweet potatos and cranberries mixed in the dish.
Good food and a good atmosphere. The strike against it is the limited choices on the menu but every dish was creative and what I had was good so Aix overcomes that problem. Aix is a great place to take a date; it's unique and has great food.
One final note, Aix notes at the bottom of their menu that they lookout for the environment by purchasing ingredients locally. This also helps support the local economy and ensures they have fresh ingredients.
Score: 8/10

People Randomly Yanked off the street for jury duty in Greeley
A strange story from 9news.com linked to by the Drudgereport: Snow on wednesday in greeley caused many people with traditional jury summons to not show up so somebody was sent out onto the streets with a stack of subpoena's to force random pedestrians to come inside and serve. Worse, this is the third time in three months that this has happened.
This seems like a pretty unfair use of government power. While we all should participate as jurors when called, we also all have lives and jobs and other obligations and people should be given the courtesy of some advance notice instead of being drafted and forced into service under threat of being held in contempt of court. Don't punish random people on the street for the 160 out of 200 people that didn't show up. If you have to, postpone trials for the day.
Really unfair, right?

Nene Update: Good news on tumor?
News is slowly bubbling out that the testicular tumor removed from Nuggets' PF Nene this week was caught early by a team physician. There was a brief posting on his own website announcing that the tumor was benign but that posting was removed. End of Colorado Blue Laws: Sunday booze sales may be coming
Colorado Senator Jennifer Veiga is planning on authoring a bill to repeal the ban on Sunday alcohol sales in Colorado; this is a repeat of her attempt to end the ban in 2005.
This bill dovetails with recent lobbying efforts by the grocery industry to allow grocery stores to sell beer and wine. In 2005, when this threat was not present, the independent liquor stores banded together to keep blue laws in effect. Now, the group has switched sides and is hoping that by opening up on Sundays, they can kill the bill allowing grocery stores to sell beer and wine.
While it would be convenient, and perhaps cheaper in the long run, to allow grocery stores to sell beer and wine, I think there would be a loss of selection as many independent liquor stores would certainly go out of business. Grocery stores would sell the beer and wine that gave them the best volumes. While independent liquor stores usually are picky about what they sell and have salespeople/owners who are incredibly astute about the products and often go out of their way to try new things and bring in great products.
I think some of this will be lost in grocery stores where it is unlikely there will be an expert on hand to make recommendations and we will be forced to choose between common volume wine labels like Gallo and Yellow Tail. On the beer front, we probably won't get the full selection of micro-brews that you can choose from at liquor stores now.
As far as a ban on Sunday sales, it is about time they are repealed. There is simply no reason to have them and it is a piece of government intrusion into our lives that is simply not needed.

Nene out for the Nuggets - Has surgery to remove testicular turmo
Nene mysteriously took a leave of absence from the Nuggets for health reasons earlier this week. Today it was reported that he had surgery to remove a testicular tumor which will be biopsied. Best wishes to Nene to get back to full health soon and fingers crossed that it was a benign tumor.
The Nuggets play the Hawks tonight and, since they couldn't last night against the Bobcats, maybe they can win one for Nene.

Restaurant Review: Encore Restaurant
Encore Restaurant is attached to the Tattered Cover (support your local bookstores) location on Colfax in the Lowenstein Theater redevelopment. Encore is owned by the same group that operates the Black Pearl on South Pearl St. (whihc I have never been to).
We came for appetizers and wine after some book shopping on a saturday afternoon. When we arrived at 4:30 or so, it was no problem getting a table but by the time we left at around 7:00, the place was packed. The bar is long and there is a piano player playing (not too loudly) in the front. It's a great neighborhood place.
We had the hummus, focaccia pizza with carmelized onions and ricotta cheese, and the grilled artichoke. The hummus was pretty standard fare with pita bread and green and black olives. Nothing special here. The focaccia pizza was a nice snack and the combination of carmelized onions and ricotta went well together; however, still nothing special. Finally, the grilled artichoke was very tender and lightly seasoned. I would give it a good rating too, but also nothing special and not nearly as good as the grilled artichoke at the Cherry Creek Grill (Review).
The wine list is smallish and is limited in choices by the glass. There are probably 18 reds and 18 whites total and 5-6 choices for each by the glass. We had a bottle of Jester wine from Australia that was very good and highly recommended at $40 per bottle, one of the cheaper wines on the list.
The service at Encore was fantastic. Our waitress was attentive and knowledgeable but not pushy in the least. The rest of the staff was helpful to her and our needs were always taken care of. This made it a great place to just sit and drink some wine and talk with friends.
This rating is not for eating dinner, because I didn't do that, but for getting apps and drinks with friends.
Score: 8.5/10

Cook Street School of Fine Cooking Taste 5 Wine Tasting Class Review
I attended the Cook Street School of Fine Cooking Taste 5 wine tasting class on Saturday where they were featuring 5 different Cabernet Savignon wines paired with foods. When signing up, I had expected a wine tasting with a lot of explanation of each wine and its characteristics. This class is something entirely different, and, in fact, not really a class at all but instead a true tasting. They give a brief description of all the wines and foods at the beginning and then you are free to go up and get whatever foods and wines you like to try. There is no (explicit) limit on quantity and there was plenty of time (from 6-9) to taste everything at a leisurely pace. The room is set up with many tables ranging in size from 4-10 as well as some stools. There are not a lot of options for a couple to get a quiet table for two, but it is perfect if you want to meet new people (not to pick up on other singles, but to meet other couples) or even better if there is another couple you want to go with.
The food prepared was delicious across the board and went nicely with what I would describe as good mid-range wines, probably in the $15-20/bottle range. Every class has a different set of wines and food, so going into specifics may not be helpful. All you need to know is that it is tasty.
Cook Street has a variety of other wine tasting and cooking classes, as well as being a top rated culinary school.

Colorado Caucus - No Polling Data to be found
The Denver Post had an article yesterday about interest in the Colorado Presidential Caucus to be held on Super Tuesday, February 5, 2008. THis was a disappointing human interest story instead of any coverage of the race here. And, in fact, where is any coverage of the race here. Sure, it is 3.5 weeks away, but I cannot find any recent polling data. The most recent I could find was some data from December, which after Iowa and New Hampshire have shaken up the race, is no longer relevant in the least.
Colorado, frankly, is overshadowed by the other major primaries held on Super Tuesday that offer many more delegates, such as California, New York, and New Jersey. The idea of moving our caucus date forward in order to get more attention has failed. In the past, there was discussion of aligning all of the mountain region states together for a primary date, but with so many states moving their primary up to February 5, which is, I think, the earliest that Democratic and Republican party rules allow for most states, that idea has not come up lately.
Even with the Democratic National Convention being held in Denver this year, there does not seem to be any extra interest in Colorado. Wouldn't the eventual Democratic nominee like to know they won the state that is holding his or her party's convention?
Please, if anybody knows of some more recent polling data for Colorado, post a comment and let us know!

Restaurant Review: Pasquini's Pizzeria (Uptown)
I've reviewed Pasquini's before for its carryout but this review is for eating in. Pasquini's in uptown has the atmosphere you would expect from a pizza place. There is a bar in the front with TV's playing whatever games happen to be on at the time. It's a good, casual atmosphere. It was Tuesday night, so we didn't have to wait.
Even before we had sat down, the hostess had put a plate of their buttery, parmesan-y breadsticks on the table. We didn't have any plates so we just didn't have any but the gesture is great.
The beer selection is a little bit light for a Colorado pizza restaurant, I have to say, but there are some good choices and you should be able to find something. Fat Tire is on tap.
I ordered a dinner salad with Italian dressing. Pasquini's gives a generous portion of lettuce, cheese, olives, tomatoes, and (no onions for me). Again, just the type of salad you would want before you eat a great pizza.
When you eat in at Pasquini's, the largest available pizza size is 18" versus 16" for carryout. We got a half cheese and half pepperoni and mushroom. The pizza came to our table piping hot and was much better eaten immediately than the usual 30 minute delay I have when I take it out. Pasquini's makes a great pizza.
The service was average but the group I was with was very engaged in our conversation so it worked out fine - I did have to ask for a missing silverware set, but no big deal.
Overall, Pasquini's Pizzeria in uptown scores a point lower for eating in than take out (at least this time) because of the limited beer selection and the average service. However, the salad is a plus and the pizza is better in restaurant.

Birth leave for East high school moms?
A girl who is pregant at East High School is requesting that they give her 4 weeks of excused absence post-preganancy... basically maternity leave.
Why not? Presuming this girl, and others in her situation, will still have to fulfill the same requirements for graduation, I think it should be fair enough for these girls to leave. However, I don't think the schools should have any special responsibility to help these girls catch up later - that is there job and one person's pregnancy cannot put undue work on teachers who are already overburdened.
These girls should take responsibility for becoming pregnant. To stay true to my libertarian philosophy, the schools shouldn't prevent them from taking time off. I hope they will realize that an education is important, especially if they need to take care of a young child. But, if the girls take time off, it is there job to get caught up. Take responsibility for yourself. And, next time, wrap it up.

Britney to Denver - Further and Final (for now) update
The rumors about Britney Spears moving to Denver/Cherry Creek North/Estes Park for rehab at the Harmony Center, while still getting everybody's interest, have not been substantiated any more. In fact, reports of the 2.2 million deposit on a home in Cherry Creek North say that the deposit was made by John Sundahl, Britney's drug counselor and rumored on and off again boyfriend. So, HE might be moving here but that is not evidence that she is. Barring any further news, I am officially putting this one to rest on this blog (even though it was a great traffic generator!)

Colorado Presidential Primary 2008 Polls
Since today is the first primary in the nation in New Hampshire, I thought I'd give an update on where the race stands here in Colorado. Unfortunately, any polling data more recent than November is not to be found. With the major shifts in the race just since Iowa five days ago, it's not relevant.
Colorado is a caucus state and will be holding them on the unofficial national primary day of February 5, along with 21 other states. Will you be caucusing?

Snow has hit denver.. it is lightly coming down in downtown but the roads are getting wet and if it gets colder it could be slick. Even as a native, it still is always kind of amazing how quickly temperatures can change in Colorado. Yesterday was gorgeous.

Britney Spears Cherry Creek North Update
Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton commented that he thought the rumors surrounding Britney moving to Cherry Creek North were probably false, given that she does not seem interested in rehab at the moment. Also, the latest news seems to have her gallavanting around with a new guy, paparazzo Adnan Ghalib, instead of the developer John Sundahl with whom she reportedly bought the house. Of course, Britney Spears is eratic so she could bounce back to Sundahl in no time.

Denver Nuggets Update - Quest for 60 wins
Nuggets beat the 76ers last night and seem to be playing better of late. Portland has won 16 of 17 and are right behind the nuggets for 1st place in the Northwest division so the Nuggets have to step it up.
They need to win 4 out of 5 games the rest of the way to reach the players' goal of 60 wins. It seems unlikely as of now but who knows? They did get a good win over San Antonio last week and they are better off at this point in the season then they have been in season's past.

Rumor Alert - Britney Spears moving to Cherry Creek North
It has been reported that Britney Spears has put a $2.2 million deposit on a property in Cherry Creek North and is looking at rehab centers in Estes Park. Is she preparing to put roots down in Denver?
If so, this is great news for local Starbucks and convenience stores. It's also probably great news for businesses in Cherry Creek North. I could definitely see her walking around and blowing a lot of money in those boutiques and galleries. Perhaps Larimer Square too?
I'll keep an eye on this story. For now, here is a link from MyFox Colorado:

16th Street Mall - Kind of a dump
Went to a movie last night at the Pavillions. The 16th street mall is kind of a dump at night, especially between champa and welton or so. It's not a place you would want to take your kids. The buildings, for now, have a lot of vacancies and there are a lot of homeless people and thugs. If Denver wants that end of downtown to develop, this part needs to be cleaned up.

HSBC Watch
To continue my mini-crusade against Furniture Row and HSBC Finance, I am posting this link to a watchdog site that keeps an eye on HSBC Finance's deceptive practices:

Burned by Furniture Row Financing Deals and HSBC
This is a rant not to pass the buck on my responsibility but to generally point out poor customer treatment I received from Furniture Row and their financing company, HSBC bank.
I purchased a couch set last year and got a no payments and no interest deal for 13 months. The problem began when I receive the monthly statements that said I owed no payments, but did not indicate when the payments would start. In fact, the statements said that the offer expired in 2009 making it seem to me that I would need to make payments at this time. Of course, this is my mistake for not being more careful, but as the bills were unclear, I got mixed up and got caught.
No interest and no payments works by saying that if you pay off the complete amount of the purchase by a designated time, then you will have no interest payments. But, if you don't pay it all off, all of the interest that would have accrued during the "no interest" period immediately becomes payable.
I began receiving collections calls from HSBC over the amount I owed on the day after those interest payments kicked in for me. I had not opened the statement for that month under the erroneous assumption that no payments were due until 2009. This added nearly $400 dollars to the amount I owed over the previous day. HSBC called 4-5 times per day until I realized my error and paid immediately on the Furniture Row financing site. Unfortunately, the payments did not post immediately and I still received harrassing collection calls. They also posted it to my credit report (the first ding I have ever gotten on my credit), even after I had already told them that the payment was submitted. They also sent a menacing letter in the mail accusing me of having major financial difficulties (with an accompanying offer to help me out with another loan at, I am sure, a terrible interest rate).
This is terrible customer service from a local company, Furniture Row, owned by Barney Vissar. Denver Mattress, Sofa Mart, Oak Express, and Bedroom Expressions are their brands. I take responsibility for not knowing what I signed up for. However, the monthly statements are confusing. Further, the practice of making harrassing collection calls the day that the huge interest hit kicked in, instead of a few days before so I could remedy the situation, and further of making a black mark to my credit report so quickly even after I had said I had paid, is terrible customer service and leaves a very sour taste in my mouth.
I will enjoy sitting on my now overpriced couch, but I will not do business with any Furniture Row companies again. (AND I'll hope for continued poor performance from Furniture Row Racing, the NASCAR team they sponsor, also owned by Barney Vissar)
Am I bitter? You bet.

Happy New Year
I'm back from a hiatus where I was away from any internet or cell phone connections. A nice vacation but I'll be back to posting today starting with a rant against a local company...
